At Monday evening’s Herscher CUSD2 Board meeting, it was announced that in-person education will resume in the fall with a few changes in the official 2020-2021 calendar. (See page 4 for calendar.)
Highlights of the calendar are: August 17, 18, and 19 will be teacher-only days.
An Institute Day has been added on September 4 in order to assess learning levels after the distance learning experience in the spring.
Another new day off is November 3, election day, which has been declared a day off of school by the state of Illinois. That date has been added to the end of the year.
The reopening brings with it several changes in hand hygiene, social distancing, and mask wearing.
Throughout the school day, each school’s interior will be sprayed with a quick-drying disinfecting solution.
Lunchtime in grades K-4 will likely take place in classrooms. Limestone Middle School and Herscher High School will have three different eating locations over multiple lunchtimes with a maximum of 50 students in each location.
Only immunodeficient students with doctors’ notes will be allow to pursue the remote learning option.
Complete details will be released the end of July.
Also discussed was the elimination of junior high wrestling if the numbers of participants do not increase.
Regarding personnel, Christopher Cooper resigned as LMS Band Director & Co-Student Council Sponsor.
The board voted to hire Diantha Strylowski – LMS Special Ed Teacher and Olivia Becker – BGS Kindergarten Teacher. Non-certified hires, pending in-person learning, were: Jackie Benoit – BGS Parapro, Morgan Jones – BGS Parapro, Erica Grady – HHS Parapro, Rachel Sumner – HHS Parapro, and Paige McClintock – LMS PT Secretary.
The following extra-curricular appointments were approved pending IESA approval for in-person practicing/competitions: Cara Anderson – LMS Athletic Director (If approved, will no longer be the LMS XC Coach.) and Megan Brosseau – LMS Co-Student Council Sponsor.
