Deb Chmielowiec, of Herscher, was recently honored as a recipient of the Illinois American Legion Caregiver Award.

Chmielowiec spends many of her days helping others in a variety of ways.

She was nominated for the award by MonaLisa Sweeney, also of Herscher.

In her nomination, Sweeney showcases the many ways in which Chmielowiec’s caring spirit assists others.

Some of Sweeney’s comments follow:

“Debbie cares for her elderly aunt, taking care of her, running her to doctors and other appointments.

Her caring doesn’t stop with family. A caregiver is one who gives care to people who need help taking care of themselves.  Debbie volunteers to deliver Meals-On-Wheels to those in need in our community.”

Sweeney contines, “Debbie organizes the Blood drive here in Herscher, which at face value doesn’t seem to fall under the care giving definition, but, she cooks food and makes sandwiches and soups to feed all who come in to give blood. She gives up seven hours that day to assist the donors.

(In addition), she picks up food items from the food pantry and takes them to whoever may need it.

Debbie also organizes and runs the County West Cancer Survivors benefit. She goes door to door to collect items to be raffled off and usually raises about ten thousand dollars to donate to the American Cancer Society every year.

Debbie reaches out to so many asking if they need rides to doctors, to pick up groceries to be sat with for company. She puts hours of time, energy and love into caring.”
