Free Desks for Students

Gunnar Tejes, Herscher High School junior, son of Dana and Mike Bennett -Tejes, is building free desks for students.

He got the inspiration from a news story about an industrial arts teacher who did something similar.

At the beginning of September, Gunnar created a GoFundMe entitled “Building Desks for Students”, and in just 2 days raised nearly $500 (enough to build 33 desks).

By researching designs, he came up with a design that costs just $15/desk.

After purchasing his materials on September 7, he went to work building the desks.

The first prototype desk was soon built and modified.

When asked why he is building free desks, Gunnar responded, “I hope this helps other kids when it comes to school work and learning, and I want to encourage kids my age to put their ideas into action.”

He has delivered his first batch of 4 desks so far, one of which went to a community library in Phoenix, IL.

No stranger to excellence, Gunnar had been scheduled to perform in the 132nd Rose Parade®, January 1, 2021 in Pasadena, California.

However, the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed that experience until 2022, when he will be playing the alto saxophone as one of the 300-piece, national Bands of America (BOA) Honor Band.

In addition to being drum major for the HHS Marching Band, Gunnar also plays for the Kankakee Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra.

In addition, he is the student council secretary for his class, and participates in varsity scholastic bowl, robotics, and jazz band. He also serves on the Camp Shaw youth advisory board.

Gunnar’s desks are now available and free for the asking. Contact: to arrange for a free student desk.
