Members of the Herscher FFA chapter attended the 91st annual Illinois State FFA Convention on June 11-13 along with more than 5,000 other FFA members, advisors, and guests.
“Elevate” was the theme of the three-day event which recognizes achievements of Illinois FFA members, elects the major state officer team, and celebrates agriculture. Students at the convention were greeted with activities including a career fair featuring colleges and agribusinesses, an evening dance and talent show, and an opportunity to engage in the history of Illinois’ capital city.
The convention featured a new Spotlight on Service poster gallery where 24 FFA chapters highlighted a service project their members completed in the past year, celebrating the collective impact of Illinois FFA’s volunteer service. The program featured addresses by National FFA Southern Region Vice President Jordan Stowe of Alabama and from each of the retiring major state officers.
During the convention, the following award was presented to the Herscher FFA chapter:
State Star Farmer Finalist - District 2: Kyler Masching is the son of David and Dana Masching of Cabery; his FFA Advisor is Larry Haigh. For his Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE), he began buying into his family's beef and grain farm, growing his ownership in the family business. Kyler began in 2016 with a 10% ownership on the beef cattle farm and working where needed on the grain operation. In 2017, he cash rented his first 40 acres while growing his beef ownership to 15%. He now owns 33% of the beef cattle business and leases or cash rents 120 acres to grow corn and 120 acres to grow non-GMO soybeans.
