After 43 years, Herscher High School cross country coach, Rick Livesey, retires from coaching.
Livesey said it was a difficult decision to make because he enjoys coaching and watching members of his team reach their potential. He also said he knew that coaching was coming to an end but was accelerated due to family changes.
“This man has touched so many lives of not only his students, but their families as well,” said cross country parent Melissa Milton. She continued, “His love for the sport is infectious!”
Livesey says the best part of coaching is being around incredible young men and women. He says watching athletes compete and be successful makes him proud and elated.
In 2017, Livesey was named ITCCCA Coach of the Year, an incredible accomplishment. He said earning this was gratifying but he also believes that it is due to the talent level and work ethic of the athletes.
Sports are a way to create relationships and bonds that last for a long time and thanks to Livesey, Herscher’s cross country team has a family atmosphere.
Livesey and his wife plan to move to the Mokena/Frankfort area to be closer to their grandchildren. He will continue to work out each day.
“Over 43 years, I learned that the formula for coaching is relatively easy. You need dedication to excellence, a passion for the sport, and loving the athletes you coach,” said Livesey.
