Mario N. Buono, 82, of Kankakee, passed away on Monday, June 3.
Buono along with his wife Mary, and their sons, Tony and Joe, owned and operated Mario’s Market in Herscher from June of 1989 until December of 2010.
In an interview with the Herscher Pilot upon his arrival in Herscher, Buono stated, “It’s my philosophy that everyone’s got a box of Tide and everyone’s got a can of Campbell’s Pork and Beans. It’s the perishable departments that make you stand out. And we’ll be starting out by expanding the bakery/deli.”
Memorable items like bakery fresh bread and donuts, and Mary’s potato salad in the deli were welcomed additions to the Herscher community.
As he departed in December, 2010, Buono stated, “The Buono family wishes to thank you for all your support and accepting us in the community,” But it is time to retire – it is time to go.”
His obituary appears on page 5.
