Melinda Sutherland and her husband, John, resided in Bonfield for 33 years where she ran the Special Friends preschool for 25 years.
She recently published a book, Moments with Melinda, a collection of stories, songs, and poems.
When asked about how long she worked on the book, Southerland states, “I started writing poems and songs for my children when they were little. (They are now 45, 44, and 43.) I started writing some of my stories and songs when I became a freelance storyteller and preschool teacher some 35 years ago. I tried to get some published but no takers. So I just stored them in a file.”
She continues, “We live in a 55+ community called ‘On Top of the World’ in Ocala, Fl. They have an outstanding program called Master the Possibilities (similar to KCC continuing education.) I took classes on writing, e-publishing and storytelling.”
She shares, “But more than physically writing the book, it was only through God’s direction did I actually finish the book. He and I worked on it while we had the stay at home order for Covid.”
According to her website, Moments With Melinda offers stories, songs, and poems to touch the soul of her readers. You may find yourself playing with your childhood friends, cooking with your grandmother, praising God, doubting God, the joys and struggles of parenting, listening a little more to children, or at the bedside of an aging parent.”
Melinda embraced her roots from Tennessee to Illinois to compile her book. She finds her inspiration from God, her family and those she taught in her preschool. In the past, she self-produced two children’s CDs, performed at Storytelling Festivals, and has facilitated at Child Care Conferences.
