Ray Schneider Named Citizen of the Year at Reception

Dan Martin, left, presents the 2020 Herscher Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year award to outgoing mayor Ray Schneider.

At a retirement reception for Ray Schneider, outgoing mayor of Herscher, he thanked his family, past and present village board members, village employees, the police department, and others in the community for their assistance over the six terms that he has been mayor.

Schneider stated, “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as the mayor of our town.”

Also at the reception, Shannon Sweeney, who will take over on Monday as the new mayor, presented Schneider with a Proclamation from the Governor.

In addition, Schneider received the Herscher Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year award for his sevice to the village.

The citizen of the year award is traditionally given at the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet in January. However, the banquet did not take place this year due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The Community Service Award, originally proposed by Don Lockwood, has been awarded since 1981 to those who have been important to the community.

Schneider is the 48th recipient to be recognized for keeping Herscher’s pride alive.
