Dr. Lawrence T. “Dr.J” Jacobsen Ed.D, 72, of Downers Grove, and formerly of Ashkum, passed away Wednesday Dec. 27, 2017 at his residence with his family by his side, following a six year battle with lung cancer. 

Funeral Services for Dr. Jacobsen were at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at the Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton. The Rev. Malcolm Jones officiated. Visitation was held on Tuesday, Jan. 2nd from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home in Clifton. Burial was in the Ashkum Twp. Cemetery. 

Dr. Jacobsen was born on February 23, 1945 at Storm Lake, IA the son of Thorwald “Swede” and Margaret Delbridge Jacobsen, his parents are deceased as are his brother, Harold and his sister and brother-in-law Rosemarie and Bill Penicook. He married the former Nancy Marie Jacobs on August 17, 1968 at Peotone and she survives. Also surviving are a daughter and son-in-law Kimberly and Kevin Butler of Downers Grove and a son and daughter-in-law Brian and Lauren Jacobsen of Hinsdale. There are four grandchildren, Maeve, Sabrina, Reid and Colette Jacobsen. In addition, he is survived by a brother and sister-in-law Richard and Shirley Fiets of N. Carolina and a sister-in -law, Geri Fiets of Bourbonnais.

Dr. Jacobsen was a graduate of Clifton Central High School in 1963. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Northern Illinois University in 1967, his Master’s Degree from Eastern Illinois University and his Doctorate from Illinois State University in Normal. 

He began teaching in 1967 at Georgetown, Illinois and remained there until 1971 at which time he became Principal at Mt. Carroll, Illinois where he stayed until 1974. From Mt. Carroll he went on to become superintendent for schools at Sparland, IL, Macon, IL and finally coming to Herscher in 1986 where he remained until his retirement in 2000. 

In his retirement, he enjoyed traveling and golfing with family and friends. He also enjoyed reading and wintering in Mexico. He was an avid Cubs and Illini fan. He belonged to the Ashkum Lions Club, the Ashkum United Methodist Church, the Illinois Association of School Administrators and was Master Mason with Macon Lodge #8 AF&AM at Macon, IL.
