Albert Johnston, 90, a long-time resident of Kankakee, IL passed away at home May 10, 2019. He was born on June 1, 1928, in Momence, IL, the son of the late Thomas and Katherine (Clark) Johnston. Albert married Phyllis Dickman on June 15, 1957 in Herscher, IL.
He is survived by his daughter Amy (John) Buonassisi of Downers Grove, IL, and two sons; James Johnston of Kankakee, IL and Jeff Johnston of Wheaton, IL. Albert is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, his parents, four brothers, Robert, William, George and Arthur Johnston and two sisters Maude Smith and Violet Jacobsen.
Albert was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a retiree of A.O. Smith, Kankakee and after his retirement he worked for 10 years at Walmart, Bradley. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Kankakee, serving as lay minister and trustee, as well as other boards. Albert was a Riverside Medical Center volunteer, working with the Meals on Wheels program and also for many years as a Lifeline installer in Kankakee County and surrounding counties. He was House Captain for the Christmas in April Charity. Albert was an experienced handyman and willing to jump in and help whenever and wherever he saw the opportunity.
The visitation was 9-11 a.m., Saturday, May 18, 2019 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Kankakee and the funeral service followed at 11 a.m. Rev. Karl Koeppen will officiate the service. Burial will be at Mound Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Capital Campaign.
