The month of September finds college students settling into their routines as classes begin and students continue working towards their goal of earning their degree or certificate. That’s why September is recognized as College Affordability Month.

Beginning to save early for a child’s education could mean less debt and stress when it comes time for them to enter a college, technical training program or university. Additionally, one study found that having a college savings account for a child made them almost 7 times more likely to attend college, regardless of the amount in the account.

As County Treasurer, I’m considering ways to promote the importance of college savings and ensure residents are aware of easy ways to save for college. Two 529 plans, administered by State Treasurer Mike Frerichs, are convenient options. More information on those plans can be found by visiting and clicking “college savings.”

As College Affordability Month concludes, I encourage fellow county residents to consider saving for their child’s education while our children are toddlers because before we know it, they’ll be planning their future.
