Saturday wrestling regionals took place at Seneca High School. The Herscher Tigers took the mat with something to prove, and in the end three wrestlers received a top 3 finish qualifying for sectionals, which is held February 8 and 9.

The wrestlers to advance to sectionals were freshman Jaxson Roberts at the 106-pound weight class, freshman Austin Grise at 113, and senior Nicolas Rink at 120. Both Roberts and Rink took first place at the tournament, while Grise lost his first match and then battled all the way back to get third.

Freshman Jaxson Roberts was very excited about the win saying, “It feels great to make it to sectionals as a freshman, but I’m kind of nervous about what the outcome might be. I just got to have a hard week of practice and go and wrestle hard. I’ll see what goes on from there.”

Coach Rod McIntire was pleased with the results at regionals saying, “We wrestled very well especially in our lower weights. (Jerry) Harsha wrestled well enough to move on but got caught unfortunately ending his season. Roberts and Rink wrestled extremely well defeating all their opponents on the way to a championship. Grise also had a stellar day and extended his season with a third place finish. If all 3 wrestlers wrestle the way they did in regionals they will all be state bound.”
