As school starts and fall begins, the 2019 soccer season gets underway. After the Herscher boys soccer team ended a promising season on a disappointing loss to Peotone in the sectional championship last year, a talented group of upper classmen is back looking to better last year’s post season run.

The Tigers started the season with a busy week of three back-to-back games.  The Tigers came away with wins against Illinois Lutheran (2-0) and Momence (5-2) on Wednesday and Thursday, before falling to Oak Forest (0-2) on Friday night. Head Coach Alan High said, “Momence was a good precursor to post season and shows the effort and heart of the preparation of the team in back to back games.” The Tigers notched seven goals across the three games courtesy of 5 different players.

Three of the seven goals came from the rock solid connection between juniors Logan Lunsford and Bascom Jackson. Bascom connected with Logan’s head on a free kick against Lutheran, and off a set piece against Momence. Logan also found Jackson’s foot during the match at Momence. Logan Lunsford said, “The overall week went really well. The team did better than what we thought. There are a few things we can fix, but that will come with time.”

Unfortunately for the Tigers, early season injuries have already started to plague the squad. With starters out and new faces stepping up, the Tigers look to continue a good start in the following week with an away matchup against Coal City. Junior Bascom Jackson said, “Looking forward, I have expectations to have our full team back together for a successful season.”
