Carol (Mannel) Royer, age 90, of Phoenix, Arizona, died on June 8, 2022.  She was born on August 10th, 1931, to Christian parents: Hildegarde (Clausen) Mannel (a P.K.) and Leonard Mannel (a butcher) in Cincinnati, Ohio.  The oldest of 5, she was baptized on August 23, 1931, and confirmed in 1945 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Steger, Illinois, by her grandfather, Pastor Peter Clausen; attended high school in nearby Chicago Heights, Illinois, along with her future husband, Pastor Wm. Royer, who worked as an apprentice butcher for her father during his high school years.  After high school she attended Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and graduated in August 1952, with a Registered Nurse degree.

On December 28, 1952, Carol and Bill were married during Bill’s 3rd year at Concordia Theological Seminary in Springfield, Illinois.  After his graduation in 1956, they served in 4 parishes from 1956-1996: St. John’s, Melcher, Iowa; Trinity, Knoxville, Iowa; Trinity, Herscher, Illinois (26 years); and St. Paul Lutheran, Chicago Heights, Illinois.

During their time in Herscher, Carol was employed at Riverside Medical Center, Kankakee, Illinois, as an RN. She cherished and lovingly supported her family in their various endeavors, including volunteering as a Cub Scout den mother, attending sports/band events, and a myriad of other ways, big and small. She was active with various church ministries and her church family was an important part of her life. She had a special place in her heart for animals.

After retirement in 1996 Bill and Carol moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where Bill remained active in interim ministry until the Lord called him home in January, 2005. Carol remained active in church ministries: choir, Bible studies, Tabitha sewing group, Braille group, shut-in ministry; food bank volunteer; rescued 2 parakeets, providing them with the best of care; and self-appointed welcome-wagon at her LifeStream Senior Living Community.

Carol is survived by 3 of her 4 children: Michael (Diana), Plover, Wisconsin; Lisa (Jerry) Nicholson, Sun City West, Arizona Nels (Sally), Ollala, Washington; 6 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Bill, and son, Bruce (Renee’).
